Mandate

 

To fulfill the needs for an association devoted to fellowship and progress amongst Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal.

To encourage and promote social fellowship between Aboriginal and  Non-Aboriginal people; and to strive to secure equality of rights and opportunities for all people regardless of race.

To promote progress in the educational, social, economic, athletic and cultural life of both the Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal.

 

The Selkirk Friendship Centre is a community based, non-profit organization with the mission of assisting Aboriginal peoples in adjusting to urban society, within the city of Selkirk, Manitoba

The Centre is the primary organization serving the Aboriginal population within the area.  Established in 1968 it began with the goal of securing equality of rights for all people, and has continued to serve in manners that adjust and adapt to the changing needs of our urban Aboriginal population.  The Selkirk Friendship Centre is well known for its ability to provide stable and consistent forms of service.  Dynamic volunteerism and sound leadership have enabled us to continue to provide stability and innovation within the community.

Our Centre sponsors many community projects/programs such as the SFC Daycare, the SFC After School Club, the Aboriginal Head Start program, Partners for Careers, the Young Minds Program, Adult Literacy Program, Family Counseling Services, and Tyro Housing.  Other Special Annual Events include: March - Spring Feast, April - Volunteer Luncheon, June - Aboriginal Day Celebrations, SFC Annual General Meeting, July & August - Summer Playground Program, October - Fall Feast, December - Children’s Christmas Party, Youth Christmas Party, and the Seniors & Singles Christmas Dinner.

Our Friendship Centre has been actively operating since 1968; it has proved to be successful in the community as indicated by the enrollment, and sustained enrollment of the community members.

The underlying role of the Selkirk Friendship Centre remains virtually the same as it has been for the past 40 years – to be actively involved in education, recreation, social and economic concerns and culture.  It currently offers a wide variety of programs and services to meet the needs of the community.
